75 years ago on March 12, 1930 Gandhiji undertook the Dandi March with 78 inmates of his Ashram with the declaration “ I regard this salt tax to be the most iniquitous of all from the poor man’s standpoint. As the independence is essentially for the poorest in the land, the beginning will be made with this evil.” On April 5 Gandhiji reached Dandi and broke the Salt Law, the next morning. The breaking of this law symbolized the people’s defiance of the British rule. |
To commemorate this historic event from our struggle of independence and introspect as to what has independence meant for the poor in the country, SAHMAT organized a function on 12th March, 2005 at 4.00 pm at the Speaker’s Hall, Constitution Club Rafi Marg, New Delhi. A book Dhundhle Padchinh by Madhukar Upadhyaya was released.and a poster Dandi March by Parthiv Shah was also released.Works by Vivan Sundaram, Arpana Caur, Haku Shah, Amit Ambalal, Jatin Das and others were also displayed. |
